1922 Tournament of Roses

Yesterday we celebrated the 100-year anniversary of Washington & Jefferson College’s undefeated season that propelled the team to the game now known as the Rose Bowl.

Yesterday, a few of the surviving family members were honored before the kickoff of W&J’s home opener versus Bethany College. Years ago, author and W&J alum E. Lee North wrote this account about my grandfather, Robert M. Murphy: The Incredible Bob Murphy of W&J College.

Recording of W&J President John Knapp’s remarks before the football game yesterday:

Prior to the 100-year family recognition ceremony at the stadium, W&J dedicated a Pennsylvania Historical Marker to the W&J quarterback who played in the 1922 Tournament of Roses game, Dr. Charles “Pruner” West:

  • Opening Remarks: John C. Knapp, Ph.D., W&J President & Professor
  • Special Guest: Linda West Nickens, Daughter of Charles F. West, M.D.
  • Guest Speaker: Kenneth Clark, W&J ’18 and Charles West Scholarship Recipient

Watch for an upcoming story on those memorable years of W&J football in the Heinz History Center’s Western Pennsylvania History Magazine Fall 2021 edition.
