Last night in Jefferson Hills Borough, Pennsylvania, Lisa Graves-Marcucci, Pennsylvania Coordinator of Community Outreach for the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP), gave an informational presentation to the borough’s Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) regarding Act 14 notifications.
These important Act 14 notifications, sent by certified or registered mail, regarding applications for upcoming gas well sites and other industrial activities, are mailed to the municipality and bordering municipalities, not just to provide project information, but as an opportunity for a municipality to file objections or concerns to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, before a final permit is issued.
Unfortunately, some local gas producers aren’t making the purpose of their Act 14 notifications completely clear to those municipalities, so these important documents are often getting filed away without the public having timely and easy access to them, without citizens having to file a formal ‘Right to Know’ request.
