While he didn’t actually call anyone “stupid” the head of the European Space Agency (ESA) — Director General Josef Aschbacher — made it crystal clear to everyone how serious the climate crisis has become. He would know, since his agency uses six families of Sentinel satellites to monitor the Earth’s surface.
His alarming remarks about the climate crisis are in an August 11, 2022 Reuters story by Tim Hepher: Climate risks dwarf Europe’s energy crisis, space chief warns.
“Today, we are very concerned about the energy crisis, and rightly so. But this crisis is very small compared to the impact of climate change, which is of a much bigger magnitude and really has to be tackled extremely fast. Of course, you always have weather fluctuations… but never of this magnitude. There is no doubt in my mind that this is caused by climate change.”ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher
THE EARTH’S “SKIN”
Hepher goes on to write: “Soaring air temperatures are not the only problem. The Earth’s skin is getting warmer too.”
“It’s really the whole ecosystem that is changing very, very fast and much faster than what scientists expected until some years ago. It is drought, fires, intensity of storms, everything coupled together, which are the visible signs of climate change. Typhoons are much more powerful than they used to be in terms of wind speed and therefore damage.”ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher
