Lightyear announces its second solar-powered EV, below $40,000
The Lightyear 2 will halve the lifetime vehicle CO2 emissions compared to a traditional EV. The vehicle also promises 500 miles of range between charges, and the company says it has received 21,000 preorders from car-leasing and ride-sharing companies. The car will add several miles each day from its solar panels, the amount determined by the level of available sunlight.

GM sales rise to 2.3 million vehicles in 2022 as EV sales soar
Among GM’s electrified vehicles, Bolt EV and Bolt EUV (electrified utility vehicle) sales totaled 16,108 in the fourth quarter. In 2022, Bolt EV and Bolt EUV sales rose 53.5% to 38,120 vehicles. The company said it expects Bolt EV and Bolt EUV production to increase to more than 70,000 units in 2023.

Rebates are limited to individuals reporting adjusted gross incomes of $150,000 or less on taxes, $225,000 for those filing as head of household, and $300,000 for joint filers. So do price caps, which can mean some examples of a particular make and model qualify while others don’t. The new incentives restrict qualifying vehicles to low-emissions trucks, SUVs, and vans with manufacturer’s suggested retail prices of up to $80,000 and cars up to $55,000.

On Friday, the U.S. electric vehicles (EV) maker slashed prices for all versions of its Model 3 and Model Y cars in China by between 6% to 13.5%, according to Reuters calculations based on the prices shown on its website. The starting price for Model 3, for instance, was cut to 229,900 yuan ($33,427) from 265,900 yuan.

Treasury omits leased EVs from made-in-America mandate
The Inflation Reduction Act, which contains some $369 billion in clean energy tax credits, has different requirements for personal and commercial vehicles, which include leases. Vehicles bought under Section 30D, which covers new consumer vehicles, must satisfy domestic manufacturing requirements to receive the full value of the credit. But those requirements do not apply to vehicles purchased under Section 45W, which covers commercial and leased vehicles.
