"The rut" draws near...
I've begun seeing deer with antlers in velvet, so their mating season, known as "the rut" can't be far off. Whitetail bucks LOVE to use young tree trunks for rubbing that velvet off their antlers while marking their territory.
Young trees in the home landscape suffer severe damage from just one of these occurrences, so it's important to be pro-active and install tree protection early. Tree trunk protectors can be as simple as perforated plastic french drain pipe cut to length and slit up one side, or you can buy them from a local garden center or on the internet.
Hitting a deer with your car is also a very traumatic experience, especially when you have a small sports car convertible like I drove back in the 70's and the deer ends up on the hood. I've used various versions of "deer whistles" since then on my cars and motorcycles, so I do believe they help avoid deer collisions.
Here's to colorful fall foliage, happy motoring and safe trees! Bob
