Beyond the meaning of Christmas, reflected in the light and so many beautiful melodies, is the magic of Christmas -- Santa Claus.
Sunday night, I watched one of my favorite movies, Ernest Saves Christmas. A true classic in my book!
Our Christmas tree was never complete without a family tradition, a Lionel train circling its base. As a kid, that train was another “Santa classic,” three silver and red Santa Fe F3 diesels pulling a row of silver passenger cars.
Our family’s annual Christmas train later became a Pennsylvania Railroad steam engine with authentic smoke, pulling a tender and a variety of brown P.R.R. passenger cars.
This year we have two of my favorites, a Fraser Fir circled by three silver Amtrak F3 diesels pulling a mixture of freight cars and a red Santa Fe caboose with lights.
In the eyes of a child (and nostalgic adults) these things will always be the magic of Christmas. Please tell Santa I said ‘Hello’ if you see him.
