Q. Now that it's mid-July here in Pennsylvania, what vegetables can I still plant and harvest before cold weather hits?
A. It is too late for many warm-season crops such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, melons or sweet corn. As long as your soil is prepared and ready to plant, you can probably still harvest bush-type green beans as long as you choose a variety that matures in 50-55 days. 'Provider' or 'Bush Kentucky Wonder' are varieties that would work for you.
Bush-type wax beans such as 'Gold Rush' or 'Indy Gold' also mature in that time frame. You might also be able to harvest some of the early maturing cucumbers such as 'Raider' or 'Bush Champion.'
Some of the burpless cucumbers also mature quickly, including 'All Season Burpless,' 'Tasty Jade,' 'Sweet Success' or 'Sweet Burpless.'
Summer squash such as zucchini, patty pan and yellow squash all mature pretty quickly as well.
Cool-season crops such as broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, radishes, beets, carrots, turnips, lettuce and spinach are often planted from early July to early August for a fall harvest. Choose fast-maturing varieties that have 55 days or less to maturity. Good varieties for fall harvest include:
Broccoli: 'Green Comet,' 'Packman'
Cabbage: 'Dynamo,' 'Stone Head'
Kohlrabi: 'Early Purple Vienna,' 'Early White Vienna'
Beets: 'Red Ace,' 'Red Cloud,' 'Forono,' 'Golden Beet'
Carrots: 'Coreless Amsterdam,' 'Thumbelina'
Spinach: 'Renegade,' 'Space,' 'Melody'
