Vietnam War Draft Lottery

Been there, done that!

With the latest hostilities in the Middle East, there has been huge interest in the Vietnam War draft lottery. I guess you could say I’m somewhat of an “experienced expert” on the 1969 draft lottery, since I drew a low enough number to be drafted in 1970, ending up in the Vietnam war zone in 1971.

“Have Guns Will Travel, Wire Swinger Pleiku”While getting drafted didn’t always guarantee an assignment in Vietnam — many of my other friends were sent to Germany — I found myself in the Central Highlands of Vietnam as my first duty assignment, after finishing Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT).
