Been there, done that!

With the latest hostilities around the world, there has been an ongoing interest in the Vietnam War draft lottery. In the 1969 draft lottery, I drew a low enough number to be drafted in the first half of 1970, ending up in the Vietnam war zone in early 1971.

“Have Guns Will Travel, Wire Swinger Pleiku”While getting drafted didn’t always guarantee an assignment in Vietnam — many of my other friends were sent to Germany — I found myself in the Central Highlands of Vietnam as my first duty assignment, after finishing Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT).
